Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is usually performed by a dentist or oral surgeon when a tooth is damaged, decayed, or causing problems like crowding or infection.

Types of Tooth Extractions:

  1. Simple Extraction – Performed on a visible tooth using forceps after numbing the area with local anesthesia.
  2. Surgical Extraction – Required for impacted, broken, or difficult-to-remove teeth. The dentist may need to cut into the gum or remove bone around the tooth.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction:

✔️ Severe decay or infection that can’t be treated with a filling or root canal
✔️ Advanced gum disease causing tooth loosening
✔️ Impacted wisdom teeth (stuck under the gums or growing at an angle)
✔️ Overcrowding (to make space for orthodontic treatment)
✔️ Broken teeth that can’t be repaired

Tooth Extraction Procedure:

  1. Numbing the Area – Local anesthesia is applied to prevent pain.
  2. Loosening the Tooth – The dentist uses special tools to loosen the tooth.
  3. Removal – The tooth is carefully extracted.
  4. Stitching (if needed) – In surgical extractions, stitches may be placed.
  5. Healing & Aftercare – Gauze is used to stop bleeding, and aftercare instructions are provided.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare Tips:

🦷 Bite on gauze to control bleeding.
🦷 Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or spitting forcefully to prevent dry socket (a painful condition).
🦷 Eat soft foods and avoid hot or spicy foods for a few days.
🦷 Take pain medication as prescribed.
🦷 Keep the area clean but avoid brushing directly on the extraction site.
