What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth and gums designed to replace missing teeth. They are custom-made to fit the shape of your mouth and are used to restore both the function and appearance of your smile. Dentures can be full, replacing all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or partial, replacing just a few missing teeth. They help with eating, speaking, and maintaining the structure of your face, offering a comfortable and natural-looking solution for those with lost teeth.

There are two types of Dentures, Full and Partial Dentures.

At Smile Solutions Dental Group of Pembroke Pines & Hialeah we offer both.

Full Dentures

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, are removable prosthetic devices used to replace all of a person’s missing teeth in either the upper jaw (maxillary), lower jaw (mandibular), or both. They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that supports a set of artificial teeth, usually made of acrylic or porcelain.

Types of Full Dentures:

  1. Conventional Full Dentures – Placed after the gums have healed following tooth extractions (can take several weeks or months).
  2. Immediate Full Dentures – Made in advance and placed right after extractions, allowing the patient to have teeth immediately, though adjustments may be needed as the gums heal.
  3. Implant-Supported Full Dentures – Secured to dental implants in the jawbone, providing more stability than traditional removable dentures.

Full dentures restore function and appearance, helping with chewing, speech, and facial support. However, they require proper maintenance and periodic adjustments for comfort and function.

Benefits of Full Dentures:

  • Restores Chewing and Eating Function.
  • Improves Speech.
  • Enhances Facial Appearance.
  • Affordable Tooth. Replacement Option.
  • Non-Invasive Solution.
  • Customizable for Comfort and Fit.
  • Easy to Maintain.
  • Improves Self-Confidence.

While full dentures provide many benefits, they require proper care, periodic adjustments, and may take some time to get used to.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. They help restore function, improve aesthetics, and prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of place.

Types of Partial Dentures:

  1. Removable Partial Dentures (RPDs) – Consist of a gum-colored acrylic base with artificial teeth attached, often supported by a metal or acrylic framework that clasps onto natural teeth for stability.
  2. Flexible Partial Dentures – Made from a lightweight, flexible material (like nylon) that blends more naturally with the gums and is more comfortable than traditional metal-based dentures.
  3. Cast Metal Partial Dentures – Have a metal framework for durability and strength, with acrylic teeth and gums attached for a natural look.
  4. Implant-Supported Partial Dentures – More secure and stable, these attach to dental implants instead of relying on clasps or adhesive.

Benefits of Partial Dentures:

  • Restore chewing and speech function.
  • Improve appearance by filling in gaps.
  • Prevent remaining natural teeth from shifting.
  • More affordable and less invasive than implants.

They require proper cleaning and maintenance to prevent gum irritation and plaque buildup. Over time, they may need adjustments as the mouth changes.
